Giving Age of Sigmar a go

So this is mainly a 30k blog but I've slowly started throwing in some other wargaming related stuff into it such as x wing. I recently decided I wanted to give Age of Sigmar a go! Yes I know it is heresy but below is my reasoning for it. Don't worry the blog won't become over-ridden with it but you may see the occasional update every now and then.

Why Age of Sigmar

So there are two main reasons for this (and sub reason). The first is that I have become totally dis-interested in 40k, playing only 30k and xwing (even if I play against a 40k army I'll use my legion now). This is kind of sad, I used to love 40k and the lore and would get the new codexes relating to my armies (space wolves and nurgle chaos) and yet now I don't. I haven't got mark of the wulfen and don't plan on getting it any time soon. Someone asked me what I thought of the whole dark angels attacking Fenris and I really couldn't care less to be honest. So to be able to play regualraly at my local Warhammer age of sigmar was the way to go (our manager is not a huge fan of forge world stuff, mainly as he can't sell it to me). So that is the first reason.

The second reason is I have seen so much cool stuff in visions, white dwarf and on social media of all the age of sigmar stuff that I thought I might as well try it out, which leads to my sub-point. It is a chance to paint something completely different. I decided to pick up some of the chaos marauder models as I really want to do a Norsca themed army (they will live in the realm of beasts for those interested) where they are beast riders with many conversions to make them as un-chaosy as I can.

From the above I have currently got 15 marauders, ten horsemen and a converted chaos gore beast chariot based on an old mournfang I had lying around from a previous project (see below and ignore the jetbikes, thats another project).

For painting I have decided to do something a little different. I've decided to rely on washes rather than layering. I spend so long on my space wolves that I would never get this army of the ground if I painted them like that. I won't win any awards for this army but that's not the point. The 15 marauders are basically finished and I only spent a couple of hours on them. I have decided that I need to go back to them and add some details, like touching up the skin tones and some of the belts etc, but for the most part I am happy and have learnt a lot about what I need to do on the next squad (the horse men). Some of the details are done (banner etc) but I want to do those by hand.

Anyway what do you guys think? What are your thoughts on age of sigmar, and I should be back in the next couple of days with an article on x wing and if I get time to write it other 30k projects that I have on the back burner.

  1. Don't be afraid to experiment with washes and bases that are away from your end goal. I get a great flesh colour from Rakarth Flesh and then Reikland Flesh shade, and similarly a good green colour from Steel Legion Drab base then an Athonian Camoshade wash.

    1. Thanks. Yeah I tried to do almost the whole model in base colours and then have washed them all and added so details afterwards (there are some photos on twitter of them finished). I need to buy some more flesh tones really/washes really. I have the bare bones as I normally paint power armour

    2. There's a lot of different things you can do with flesh, and it could take a while to play around and find recipes you like. Have fun with it!

  2. Your stuff is looking great Philip, as always. Are you going to do anything with the banner in the post wash picture, add symbols or something or leave it as it is?

    1. Thanks very much. Currently no, I'm working on finishing up older projects at the moment so that I can get myself some more stuff soon. I might add symbols or most likely a pattern of some sort later but it's not my priority
